 店のつくりも客の様子もどう見ても居酒屋だが、みんなコーヒー牛乳のみながらケーキを食っている。

Enjoy Peach But Don't Brandish a Knife 2010/07/09(金) 00:32:53
Peach is in season in Japan and a lot of travel agents organize one-day peach picking tour around this time of the year. We called it “Momo Gari” here, literally translated as “peach hunting”, which means peach picking in Japanese.

When I passed by a travel agent, a flyer with a title “Peach Picking. All You Can Pick and Eat!” caught my eyes. I picked up the flyer and looked at the photograph in which many peaches were hanging from the branch, my mouth started watering. The temptation was irresistible and I decided to join the tour.

Sicko reminded me of one of my funny experiences I had with my wife who has a different cultural background.

One day, I took my wife to a dentist for a dental check up. It was her first time going to a dental clinic in Japan.

When I was waiting for her, the dentist came up to me suddenly. He looked a little confused. He said “I found two cavities in your wife's teeth and when I tried to fill them, your wife started to ask many questions. Can you come along and see what's happening?”

I thought there might be some misunderstandings due to cultural differences. I rushed to her and asked what seemed to be the trouble. According to her, the dentist tried to fill her cavities without consulting her.

After a short chat, I realized the root of the problem. Her mindset was still American. In the States, the extent of the coverage depends on your dental insurance contract. It is different for everyone based on your premium paid, insured liabilities and deductibles. It would cost a lot if you are not covered under your plan.

I said to her “Don't worry, the health insurance policy includes almost everything in Japan ranging from athlete foot to brain surgery.” The fee turned to be around 3000 yen. Dirt cheap compared to American dentists.

She was awestruck by the Japanese medical care system. She said “Japan has a comprehensive insurance system like other socialist countries.” Then I replied “No! Japan IS a socialist country, on the surface it looks like a capitalist country though.”

At first, I thought Sicko was all about uninsured people, but it's just part of the story. At the beginning of the film a guy named Adam who doesn't have health insurance coverage appears on the scene. He is sewing up a serious wound on his leg with stitches. Then the narrator says “But this film isn't about Adam.”

The film focuses on insurance company fraud. Insurance companies reject claims made by their customers who have adequate coverage so as to maximize profit. In order to deny these claims, they search for the slightest flaws in their application procedures.

While watching the DVD, my wife who lived in the States for a number of years nodded and said “That's true” many times.

Last week, I dropped by a video shop on my way back from shopping.
When I looked at the shelves full of DVDs, I spotted a video entitled “Sicko” , a controversial film directed by Michael Moor.
Then his chubby face wearing a baseball cap popped up in my mind and I remembered that somebody on the “Homeiroku” – a collection of blogs of self-proclaimed traders - had mentioned this documentary.
The shop had a 100 yen campaign at that time and all DVDs were available at that price, so I rented it just out of curiosity.
